  Detached Accessory Buildings
  None

In April of this year, the Riverton City Council adopted changes to the City's ordinance regarding detached accessory buildings such as garages and sheds.  The purpose of the ordinance amendment was to clarify the requirements in the ordinance, and to help address concerns regarding the potential impacts of large accessory buildings on adjacent properties. One of the more significant changes was to the section of the ordinance dealing with buildings smaller than 120 square feet, which includes small sheds. The previous ordinance required the same building materials and placement on property for small sheds as for large detached garages. The City Council adopted updated language that allows more flexibility on placement and building materials for accessory buildings smaller than 120 square feet. Another change was to the maximum allowed height of accessory buildings. The maximum height for an accessory building was set at twenty (20) feet for all lots under one acre in size, and accessory buildings on those lots are now limited to a single story. The language regulating exterior building materials was also clarified, with the requirement that for buildings over 120 square feet, only materials used on the home can be used on the accessory building. The ordinance includes allowances for accessory buildings used for animals and other agricultural use. The full text of the ordinance is available online, or at the Riverton City Planning Department. Please feel free to contact the Planning Department at 801-208-3141 with any questions or concerns regarding these changes.

  Utah Shakeout – April 17, 2012
  None

Please help us by participating in the Utah Shakeout exercise on April 17th. On this day, we ask each resident to contact their Block Captain between 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Each Block Captain is responsible for 7-10 households and lives adjacent to you. If you don’t know who your Block Captain is, ask your neighbor. In the instance of a City wide emergency such as an earthquake, the City has adopted UFA’s geographical boundary which is defined by the LDS church ward and stake boundaries and ask citizens to follow the emergency procedure outlined below:

1. Report to your Block Captain the status of your home and family
2. The Block Captain will report to the Team Captain
3. The Team Captain will report to the Area Captain
4. The Area Captain will report to the City

By following this procedure, City resources can be utilized more efficiently, but more importantly, those who have immediate or life threatening needs can be quickly addressed and emergency personnel dispatched accordingly. If and when a City or County emergency occurs, whenever possible stay in your homes and neighborhood and take care of one another. Mass sheltering/care resources could be easily exhausted and not nearly as comfortable as remaining in your own environment.

It is the hope of the City, that every resident will take the responsibility of personal family preparedness. There are a number of resources available on the Be Ready Utah website at www.bereadyutah.gov. Or you may contact Sheril at Riverton City at (801) 208-3120 or by email at sgarn@rivertoncity.com. Click here for more information about emergency preparedness.

Register Your Mobile Number for Important Emergency Communication
  None

The Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (“VECC”) responds to your 9-1-1 call and dispatches needed firefighters and police officers. These same dispatchers can also send out emergency notifications to you and the community. If you see “0000000000” on your Caller ID, answer the phone because it could be fire, police or the City calling with emergency information. To send those emergency messages, VECC uses a 9-1-1 database for home and business phone numbers obtained from Qwest. Unfortunately, if your phone service uses the Internet to make your connection, such as Comcast cable, or you use a cellular phone as your home phone number, you could be missed. To register your mobile number, visit the VECC website by clicking here. This service is quick, free and secure. You will be asked to create a login and password in order to protect your information. This will make sure you don’t miss future emergency notifications.
